City outlines summer parks schedule, volunteer shifts and small-equipment costs

Commissioner Edwards reported that the city’s Parks & Rec summer program will begin on or around June 22 and will include activities at multiple sites including Union Broach, River Gene Block, Hall Park and City Center, with shorter daily hours intended to align with lunch-service schedules.
Edwards said local businesses have committed to sponsor teams and purchase cornhole sets and other durable game equipment. "I estimated it at 1,200," she said of an earlier budget figure, and added that a later price list for larger items — cornhole sets, card tables with chairs and a croquet set — came to "$1,038." She also noted smaller incidental items such as scorecards and whistles were not included in that subtotal.
The committee discussed logistics for volunteer shifts, with Edwards explaining volunteers arriving at 11 a.m. would not be expected to stay through the entire afternoon. She told members she will provide a registration slip and a full schedule to staff for posting: "I already have it on my laptop. Give that to him, he could put it on the city website," she said about staff support for publishing materials.
Members asked that information also be made available in printed flyers at City Hall, the library and partner businesses, and be shared on social media to reach residents who do not regularly check the website.
The program will be staffed primarily by volunteers and existing youth work crews; Commissioners discussed using court and field availability to schedule tournaments and avoiding conflicts with existing leagues.
The update closed with committee members asking for a complete equipment list to appear in the meeting packet; Edwards said a quote listing all equipment is included on the last sheet of the packet. The committee agreed to refer logistical details to staff for posting and further coordination.
