Sylvania City Council voted March 16 to authorize the administration to advertise for bids on Phase 2 of the downtown transportation improvements, a construction package for Main Street between Maplewood and Erie with an estimated construction cost of $5,281,527.73.
Mr. Shaw told council the city has Ohio Public Works Commission funding tied to the project, including a $439,500 grant and a $439,500 zero-interest loan; the remainder will be locally funded from the capital improvement account. "As a reminder, we do have Ohio Public Works Commission funding tied to this project with $439,500 as a grant and the remaining $439,500 that we applied for as a zero ... zero interest loan," he said. Staff said construction could begin in July and the city aims to complete most work before the next construction season, with the goal of finishing in time for Memorial Day the following year.
Mr. Shaw described traffic management plans for the work: northbound traffic on the affected stretch will be maintained while southbound traffic will be routed around the work zone, with alternating side closures used to keep one northbound lane open. He said the city will attempt an accelerated schedule and expects a similar traffic control approach to Phase 1.
The council motion to authorize advertising for bids passed by voice vote. The administration will return to council with bid results and contract awards under the city's standard procurement and contracting procedures.
