Sumter County Council approves rezoning at 1022 Pocala Road

County Council on Tuesday approved second reading of rezoning application RZ2602 to consolidate a roughly 0.6-acre portion of a 1.35-acre parcel at 1022 Pocala Road into a single General Commercial zoning tract.
Kyle Kelly of planning staff told the council the parcel is currently split between R-6 and General Commercial and that the proposed change would bring the entire block with direct arterial access into the same commercial category. "The 2040 future land use plan identifies this property in the priority commercial corridor," Kelly said, noting the planning commission recommended approval.
During the public hearing, resident Annette Green asked what uses the rezoning would allow and whether existing storage and automotive uses would continue. Planning staff replied applicants had not submitted a specific planned use and that permitted uses in the General Commercial zone range widely "from automotive repair to outdoor storage."
Council conducted second reading and approved the ordinance as recorded in the meeting (transcript reference: ordinance number 261042). Staff offered to meet individually with residents who wanted site photos or more explanation of planned-development terminology.
The approval moves the parcel closer to redevelopment options consistent with the county's mixed-use corridor planning guidance; no specific redevelopment proposal was presented or approved as part of the rezoning vote.
