Plano highlights volunteer program that it values at more than $3 million annually

City staff outlined how Plano organizes and deploys volunteers across departments and partner organizations, and how the program supports libraries, parks and seasonal campaigns.
Andrew Fortu, Director of Policy and Government Relations, introduced the department overview and invited Carina Sadler to present details about the volunteer program. Sadler said the city’s volunteer portal hosts about 6,000 volunteer profiles and that the program mobilizes roughly 700 volunteers annually across city departments.
"For the first time that value has exceeded $3 million for the volunteer program," Sadler said, noting the figure is the product of the program’s recorded hours and an established valuation method. She described onboarding, background checks, partnerships with courts for community-service placements, corporate volunteer days, and recognition programs such as the Mayor’s Volunteer Service Award.
Council members asked about juvenile participation and logistics for probationer community service; Sadler and staff explained contracts with court and probation offices and said some placements are limited by scheduling and facility availability. The presentation concluded with staff offering follow-up details for council and noting materials in the annual report.
