The Douglas County Board of Commissioners voted May 12 to reduce the size of the county Planning Commission from nine members to seven, with an effective date recorded as June 1, 2026.
Kent Hall, the county’s environmental services director, told the board the change has been considered at various times and the county is "just at a point now where we feel like it this is the appropriate time to to make this move and reduce the number from 9 to seven." He explained that two members’ terms expire at the end of May and that not reappointing one of those members will bring the commission to seven total members.
Commissioners who spoke in favor of the change cited difficulty recruiting volunteers and meeting efficiency. Commissioner Friend said reducing the panel makes it easier to reach consensus and acknowledged volunteer availability constraints: "it's difficult to get members... you're talking about a volunteer job and people... have jobs." The consent-agenda motion to approve items B through I, which included the Planning Commission change, passed by a 7–0 vote.
The board noted the resolution will be updated to show the effective date of June 1, 2026. No public comment or separate vote on the planning commission item was recorded; the change proceeded as part of the consent agenda.
