Paula Friez re-elected chair as Senior Citizens Commission finalizes fall events, requests tree maintenance

The Bolton Senior Citizens Commission re-elected Paula Friez as chair and Corenda Haugh as co-chair at a regular meeting on Sept. 10 at the Senior Center, approved the June 4 minutes, and reviewed a slate of fall programs while raising a safety concern about a tree on the center’s property.
In procedural business, Commissioner Cheryl Udin moved to accept the minutes of June 4, 2024 “as written”; Commissioner Corenda Haugh seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. Later, Leslie Shea moved to re-elect Paula Friez as chairman, with Corenda Haugh seconding; that motion passed. Cheryl Udin then moved to re-elect Corenda Haugh as co-chair, a motion seconded by Leslie Shea that also passed.
Carrie Concatelli, director of Senior and Social Services, told the commission the senior center is recruiting extra van drivers and that the job description is posted on the town website. Concatelli also said staff are preparing for holiday registrations and programs.
The commission reviewed scheduled events for the fall and early winter: an appreciation lunch for Senior Center Month on Sept. 12 at noon; a breakfast trip to Flat Pennies Restaurant in Willington on Sept. 12 at 9:15 a.m.; a Mohegan Sun casino trip on Sept. 26 at 9:15 a.m.; a Veterans Day luncheon on Nov. 11; holiday decorating scheduled for Dec. 5 at 10 a.m.; and a holiday luncheon on Dec. 12 at the Nutmeg Restaurant and Banquet in East Windsor. The minutes note that additional programs and trips are listed in the center newsletter.
Commission members raised a safety concern after noticing a few dead branches on a tree in front of the senior center. They asked that the town crew inspect the tree and remove any dead branches to reduce risk to seniors and visitors. The minutes record the request but do not show a formal vote to dispatch the town crew; the request was presented to staff for follow-up.
The meeting concluded with commissioners setting the next meeting for Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 1 p.m. and adjourning at 1:39 p.m.
