Weymouth mayor: revised teachers’ proposal presented, ratification pending

Mayor Robert Headin said negotiators for the town and school administration presented a reworked proposal to the Weymouth Education Association during mediation and that roughly 35 teachers were present for the session.
“[Town staff] reworked things a little bit, came up with a new proposal that they put in front of the teachers union,” Headin said on the program. He said a spreadsheet showing the impact for individual teachers changed the mood at the session and that the parties had reached an agreement on terms. Headin cautioned, however, that the agreement had not yet been ratified by the union’s general membership as of the tape date.
The mayor described frustration around prolonged negotiations and noted that the Massachusetts Teachers Association (MTA) has taken an assertive stance in several municipalities; he also discussed pending state legislative proposals related to strikes and binding arbitration. Headin reiterated that school-related bargaining is handled by the school committee rather than the mayor’s office and said the town’s chief negotiation staff and Assistant Superintendent Brian Smith had been involved in the sessions.
No strike or vote was reported on the program. The mayor said parties were hopeful about ratification but did not provide a timetable for a membership vote.
