"We collaborate with so many different agencies to spread the word and the message about mental health," said Miss Laura, a Border Region representative who summarized partner participation at a resource fair and an art exhibit where client pieces were sold. She described outreach and local-media interviews connected to the awareness events.
Committee members and partner agencies listed May activities that included a regional symposium organized with the Texas Department of State Health Services and local partners, barber-shop haircuts offered on Thursdays, weekly "coffee with a positive message" at PJ's Coffee and multiple radio and TV interviews. The committee announced a 988 'You're Not Alone' rally scheduled for Friday, May 29 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the corner of Delmare and McFersonen (near the Bank of America), and encouraged supporters to wear 988 shirts or purple.
Assistant Chief Gonzalez and Sergeant Navalos reported they had briefed the Rotary Club and local publisher William Green about the city's resource gaps; speakers said those groups pledged to help amplify funding needs to legislators and the public. United ISD counselors led mental-health fairs at four high schools with partner agencies demonstrating impairment-prevention activities and sharing resources with students.
Organizers emphasized material tactics to increase visibility for younger audiences, including QR-code links, stickers and booth giveaways, and asked committee members to forward upcoming event details to Angie for webpage posting. The committee also discussed outreach timing for college campuses to avoid finals and recommended targeting orientation and earlier-semester events.
The committee will continue coordinating event calendars and outreach materials for September Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and other fall activities.
