GIS leaders describe student jobs program that engaged roughly half the school

GIS principal Mr. Gibson and staff presented a yearlong leadership initiative using the 'Leader in Me' framework and a student-jobs program that the school said engaged roughly half the building.
Gibson said the school offered 19 job options and that of 670 students about 350 applied. Jobs included a podcast team, display/ bulletin work, cafeteria helpers, traffic-duty students and a student-led recycling program. Becky Kraton described the selection process: teachers presented job options across three days, students ranked top choices via Google Form, and coordinators matched students based on openings and parental permission.
Presenters said students received job training, signed contracts outlining expectations, and performed duties during morning announcements, lunch, genius-hour slots and assemblies. The program includes student-led activities at events and created leadership roles that staff said carry over into middle and high school.
"We had 19 different options for them...we had 350 apply for jobs," Gibson said, describing how the program increased student ownership and connection to school. Staff asked for continued support to expand participation and to resolve scheduling conflicts with band and other electives that limited some students' ability to take jobs.
The presentation included an 11-minute student-produced video and examples of student work; the board thanked the presenters and commended the program.
