The Hemet City Council approved an agreement with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire) that pre-funds protection coverage for a 417-acre area, in a measure staff described as an insurance-like reimbursement arrangement.
Council members asked that the resolution specifically record the contract cost; a councilor requested the figure be added and the motion to approve item 17E was made with the dollar amount written into the resolution. Staff and Interim Fire Chief Phillips explained the agreement functions like an insurance policy: the city reimburses an agreed upfront rate so CalFire has pre-authorized coverage and the city is not later billed an unbudgeted incident cost. “The reimbursement is the upfront cost of the $22,000 for that 417 acres of coverage,” staff explained.
Council voted in favor of the item by roll call; staff said they are continuing conversations with CalFire and county partners to evaluate whether additional adjacent areas should be added under similar agreements in future fiscal years.
