Exeter Planning Board tables J. Calley Associates case and extends Phillips Exeter Academy approval for one year

The Exeter Planning Board on May 14 voted to table planning board case 26-3 (J. Calley Associates, tax map 65-125) to the board’s May 28, 2026 meeting at the applicant’s request and unanimously approved a one-year extension for Planning Board case 22-6 sought by Phillips Exeter Academy.
Chair Langdon Plummer read the request to table case 26-3 after the applicant informed the board that an abutter needed additional notice; the motion to table carried on a voice roll call. The board then heard from Heather Taylor, who introduced herself: "My name is Heather Taylor. I am the campus planner and architect at the academy," and explained that the academy now owns the First Baptist Church property and intends to convert the previously approved 11 condos into a dormitory. She asked that the board extend the conditional approval to keep the approval active until the academy is ready to file final plans.
Sam MacLeod moved that Phillips Exeter Academy’s request for a one-year extension for Planning Board case 22-6 (renovation of the Baptist Church at 43 Front Street) be approved until May 26, 2027; the motion was seconded and the board voted unanimously in favor. Members noted the Historic District Commission had reviewed the modest exterior changes and that parking arrangements would be addressed at the time detailed plans are filed.
The board also reviewed and approved edits to the April 23 minutes (text corrections, place-name clarifications and spelling fixes) and closed the agenda items. The meeting adjourned after a brief round of other business.
