Board approves education MOU with School District 271 for juvenile detention center

The Kootenai County Board of Commissioners approved a multi-year memorandum of understanding May 26 with School District 271 to deliver education services inside the county juvenile detention center.
A county staff member explained the agreement outlines cooperative operations and that the district provides teachers, supplies and computers. "There are no direct costs to the county," staff said, adding Title I funds and district funds pay for two full-time teachers assigned to the detention center. The presenter estimated those district funds amount to "somewhere more than $300,000 a year" to support the staffing and materials.
Commissioners asked questions about space and funding; staff said the county provides classroom space and the district supplies educators and materials. The board voted to approve the agreement.
The approval means the district and county will continue the current educational arrangement under the signed MOU beginning July 1, with the district responsible for classroom instruction and materials.
