Topeka police announce restaurant fundraisers and seek donations for fallen officer memorial
Summary
Lieutenant Calvin Johnson said the Topeka Police Department will hold three restaurant fundraisers (May 28 at Qdoba, June 8 at Texas Roadhouse, July 28 at The Pad) and is soliciting donations after insurance and restitution covered little of the cost to rebuild a memorial damaged by a DUI; about $40,000 has been raised so far.

Lieutenant Calvin Johnson of the Topeka Police Department urged community support for rebuilding the fallen officer memorial, which was destroyed by a DUI. He announced three fundraising events that will share a portion of restaurant proceeds: May 28 at Qdoba (20–25% of sales), June 8 at Texas Roadhouse (10% of sales) and July 28 at The Pad (portion of proceeds).
Johnson said donations can be made via QR code, by leaving a check at the Law Enforcement Center front desk or through the police credit union in the lobby; he said private fundraising is needed because insurance and court-ordered restitution provide minimal recovery. "I think last I heard we were about $40,000 has been raised," he said.
Officials said a previously planned park-like design with a reflection pool approached nearly $1 million in estimated cost, so they are reviewing scaled-back options that better match likely donation levels.
What’s next: The police department will report fundraising totals in the coming months and pursue scaled design plans that align with funds raised.
