Administrators told the Siren School District board that current course‑selection returns show low enrollment in several science courses and that staffing constraints are limiting the district’s ability to offer those classes.
“I mean, I appreciate what he's doing,” the principal said of a current teacher covering multiple science periods, then supplied numbers: seven students signed up for field biology, about eight for general biology and eight for AP biology; scheduling returns were incomplete but showed small cohorts for chemistry and other electives. The principal and board members warned that juniors and seniors leaving early for lunch or other electives could complicate scheduling and graduation planning.
Board members pressed for recruitment steps. One member said, “I think this just goes to show we really need to hire another science teacher.” Administrators agreed to post openings and to advertise both internally and externally using the district website and Facebook; the board also asked that paid ads (newspaper or job sites) be weighed only after internal recruitment efforts.
The board also addressed a personnel posting error: an FIAD (adaptive PE) position had been posted as full‑time when it was intended to be a halftime role. An administrator said she would correct the advertisement immediately, acknowledging that a misposted full‑time notice could mislead applicants and affect current staff expectations.
Separately, the board accepted the resignation of a nominated volleyball head coach, who rescinded her nomination for personal reasons; administrators will repost the opening both internally and externally. The board approved hiring a middle school baseball assistant coach (Nick Webster) after recommendation from athletic staff.
The board asked administrators to ensure seniors meet graduation requirements as schedules are finalized and to report back on recruitment results once job postings close.
