Private mortuary operations proposal for 135 Weekly Lane put under advisement by committee

Quint Baird, a local funeral director, told the committee that he and partners planned a business-to-business mortuary operations facility at county-owned property at 135 Weekly Lane in Smyrna and sought county willingness to sell or lease the parcel.
Baird described a proposed 5,000–7,000-square-foot facility with refrigerated holding, embalming suites and cremation infrastructure to serve regional funeral homes and to reduce long-distance transports to Davidson County. He said private investors were prepared to invest about $5 million to acquire and develop the property, buy equipment and provide startup capital.
Commissioners asked whether the town of Smyrna had planning approval or a first-right-of-refusal arrangement, whether the site—s zoning and land-use classification would permit the use and whether a formal term sheet and an appraisal were available. Several members raised procurement and legal concerns about selling county land without public advertising and seeking competitive bids.
Following questions, the committee voted to take the proposal under advisement and asked county legal staff and property management to review land-use compatibility, procurement requirements and to request a written term sheet and suggested appraisal from the proposers. No sale or lease was approved at the meeting.
Commissioners emphasized the committee intended to perform due diligence before any motion to approve a sale or lease was considered by the full commission.
