Staff seeks extension for code-enforcement consultant to finish Okachobee corridor cases

Staff told the workshop that the town hired a code-enforcement consultant in January 2026 to assist with code hearings and staff training related to enforcement along Okachobee Boulevard and other commercial corridors. The current contract expires May 31, 2026; staff asked the council to authorize extending the consultant's services through the end of the fiscal year, Sept. 30, 2026, on the same terms.
Staff said the original agreement authorized up to $5,000 per month and an hourly rate not to exceed $200, and that the town manager can approve professional-services contracts up to $25,000 absent further council authorization. Council members discussed whether the consultant had been performing beyond the expected hours, whether the consultant had been consulted and was willing to continue, and whether the extension would complete initial hearings along Okachobee.
Council members also cautioned against council involvement in individual code cases and were reminded that code enforcement matters are administrative; elected members should direct concerns to staff and allow administrative staff and the special magistrate to handle individual matters.
Next steps: staff will include the consultant-extension resolution on the consent agenda for the upcoming meeting unless members request it be moved to regular discussion; staff will also confirm consultant availability and prepare any necessary backup.
