Resident urges Laramie to extend recreation center evening hours

DJ Mackey, a self-identified Laramie resident, urged the Laramie City Council on May 26 to extend evening hours at the Laramie Recreation Center to better serve working residents and students.
Mackey said many people cannot use the center because it currently closes early and that later hours would support healthcare workers, retail and restaurant staff and college students. "I propose keeping the rec center open until 10, the aquatics closing at 9," he said, adding that shifting cleaning hours could enable longer service without hiring many additional staff.
Mackey also said extended hours would make better use of the city’s existing investment and could improve membership retention and revenue from programs and facility use. Council members responded by inviting Mackey to email the city with details and by asking staff to follow up on what a later schedule might require operationally.
The council did not take immediate action; the topic was presented as public comment and the council asked staff to investigate operational and budget implications as a follow-up step.
