North Miami proclaims Older Americans Month, highlights centennial plans and issues hurricane-preparedness reminder

Mayor Alex Dome read a proclamation declaring May as Older Americans Month and praised the city’s Housing & Social Services programs as among the county’s best.

Albert Gio of the Housing & Social Services department accepted the proclamation on behalf of staff, thanking the mayor and council and saying the recognition "means a lot to us." Sabine Ducio, chairwoman of the Centennial Committee, gave a monthly update: she encouraged residents to view the committee’s Centennial web page, announced a call to artists for a Centennial mural to be sited on a city facility in partnership with the CRA and the Mocha Museum, and said the committee will present budget recommendations to the council in June. "The Centennial web page is where residents and visitors alike can find all Centennial information," Ducio said.

City announcements by Savannah Dre Smith listed community programs, including Haitian Heritage Month materials at the library, a small-business grant program (up to $7,500, reimbursement basis, CDBG compliance), Youth Council applications (May 1–June 12, 2026), free native trees in June, and expanded Scott Galvin Community Center hours beginning June 8. Several event dates and department contact numbers were provided during the announcements.

An assistant chief from the North Miami Police Department briefed the council on hurricane season preparation, citing National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecast ranges and urging residents to prepare. "We're going to hope for the best and prepare for the not so best," the assistant chief said, and reminded the public the city will conduct a tabletop exercise for staff to test emergency plans.

The meeting closed after routine consent and agenda business; citizen forum drew no public speakers.
