Kaplan police chief reports three new hires and training progress

The chief said one recruit, Shane, is three weeks into the academy and has passed his early exams, including an initial firearms qualification. "He's passed his first exam," the chief said, adding that firearms and other modules were underway. Another recent hire was described as post-certified and needing only a short refresher course rather than the full academy.
The chief confirmed the local academy is conducted near St. Martinville (by the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office) and noted that the academy is about a 1–hour drive; instructors are building dorm facilities that might reduce commute burdens for future classes. The chief said the city typically sends recruits to the academy and that the city pays $1,000 per recruit with roughly half reimbursed after completion.
