Board discusses replacing contract public defender, new data storage buys after drug-bust cases

At its May 6 meeting, the Jefferson County Public Defender Board discussed replacing contract public defender J. Spencer and operational steps taken after recent drug-bust cases.
Devon Sharpe, the county’s chief public defender, said the office does not yet have a replacement and that David Knox was mentioned as a potential candidate. Sharpe also reported that the office purchased hard drives and readers recommended by the prosecutor’s office to handle a large volume of data from the drug-bust matters, and that the language line service had been used successfully on several occasions and “does not charge much,” according to the minutes.
Board member Robert Little recommended looking into storage containers that could be used to transport evidence and data materials. Sharpe added that many out-of-contract attorneys were appointed to represent those arrested in the drug-bust cases and that those appointments went smoothly. The minutes also note the CM Data pilot project received reimbursement.
No formal appointment to replace the contract public defender was recorded in the minutes, and no motions or votes on personnel selection or equipment procurement were recorded during the meeting.
