Odor subcommittee shows proof-of-concept 'fingerprinting' tests; committee considers Nasal Ranger and reporting changes

Jennifer (odor-and-methane subcommittee) presented proof-of-concept air sampling using thermal desorption tubes and laboratory analysis to create chemical fingerprints at three perimeter sites — Coffin Butte Landfill, the regional compost facility (PRC) and a pulp/paper facility — and said the samples can show characteristic peaks (for example, short-chain fatty acids at the landfill and limonene at the compost facility).
Jennifer said the work was ‘‘a proof of concept’’ and that with more samples, triplicate measurements and additional sites an analyst can integrate peaks, compare signatures against libraries and potentially use machine learning to apportion air masses to likely sources. She emphasized that the single-liter samples are snapshots and that a more thorough dataset is required to draw firm conclusions.
The committee discussed multiple likely sources of area odors (landfill, PRC, wastewater treatment, paper mill and agricultural operations), the influence of inversions and the value of matching sampling times and wind conditions to complaint reports. Members proposed procedural changes to reduce wasted field visits when conditions differ from the complaint (for example, using screenshots of wind data or model wind-stream maps) and considered community deployment of low-cost field olfactometers (the Nasal Ranger) or a loaner library model to support volunteer monitoring.
Committee decisions and next steps: the owners committee will evaluate the Nasal Ranger and how a loaner/device-share program could work; the committee agreed to develop a proposal to change the complaint triage and response workflow (including guidance for when on-site investigations should be dispatched) and to explore training volunteers for a monitored, documented ancillary reporting program.
Why it matters: residents reported frustration that investigations often arrive after the reported odor event and that inspectors rarely confirm detection; the proposed combination of objective sampling, wind/context data and simple field olfactometers is intended to increase confidence and produce verifiable evidence to help identify sources.
