Brookings council adopts $69.8 million budget for 2026–27, declares tax levy

The Brookings City Council adopted the city’s fiscal year 2026–27 budget on May 27, approving a $69,783,479 spending plan and taking the required steps to levy taxes and make appropriations.

City staff member Steph. opened the required public hearing on the budget and told the council that the total approved budget for fiscal year 2026–27 is $69,783,479, with general fund operating expenditures listed as $9,613,100, revenues projected at $7,613,100 and a contingency of $768,419. "This is annually the state of Oregon requires the opportunity for the public to comment on the use of state revenue sharing funds..." Steph. said when introducing related statutory requirements.

The hearing drew no public comment and was closed. Councilors then moved to adopt resolution 26-R1293, which formally adopts the budget, declares the tax levy and makes appropriations so the city can implement the 2026–27 fiscal plan and receive tax revenues. The motion carried on a recorded vote.

Councilors who voted in favor were recorded in the minutes; the clerk confirmed the motion carried. Council members praised staff for managing the budget process and noted Brookings avoided major service cuts or steep increases to residents during a difficult fiscal period for some Oregon towns.

The council also completed a separate, related public hearing and adopted resolution 26-R1292 declaring the city's election to receive state revenue sharing for 2026–27.

The council did not receive public testimony at either hearing. Next procedural steps are implementation of the adopted budget and routine monitoring by staff and council over the coming fiscal year.
