Nederland council certifies May 3 election results and swears in mayor and council members

The Nederland City Council on its organizational meeting certified the results of the May 3 general election and formally swore in newly elected officials. By voice vote the council approved Resolution 2025-05 canvassing the election.
The clerk read vote totals aloud: for mayor Jeff Darby 1,178 and Emtt Hollier 837; for Ward 2 Brittain (Britten/Britain) Jones 1,311 and Sylvia Root 691; for Ward 4 Jeff Ortiz 1,440 and David Galot 574. After the reading the council moved and approved the canvass resolution.
Following the canvass the council presented a plaque to outgoing Mayor Don Albanese and administered oaths of office. Jeffrey Paul Darby took the oath for mayor, swearing, “I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the duties of mayor of the city of Nederland,” and Jeff Ortiz likewise pledged the duties of his office. Family members joined the newly sworn for photos and brief congratulations.
The council also recognized outgoing council member Sylvia Root, who told the body it had been “an honor and a privilege to serve.” The canvass and swearing-in concluded without recorded roll-call tallies; the meeting record shows the measures passed by voice vote. The council moved on to organizational and business items after the ceremony.
