Mechanicsburg Area Meals on Wheels asks Lower Allen for continued support after serving 50,000 meals

Dave Shriner, president of Mechanicsburg Area Meals on Wheels, briefed the Lower Allen Township Board of Commissioners on Sept. 23 and asked the township to consider supporting the nonprofit’s operations in 2025.
"We delivered over 50,000 meals," Shriner said, describing the service year that ran through August 2024. He said the organization is self-funded, not affiliated with any national, state or federal Meals on Wheels program, and relies on community fundraising and donations to operate. Shriner said the local program ran on the labor of about 150 volunteers and one paid food director, and that it currently serves approximately 26 clients in Lower Allen Township; he noted client counts vary as individuals enter or leave the program.
Shriner thanked the board for prior support and said he was available to answer questions. Commissioners expressed appreciation for the program’s value to residents and indicated the request will be considered during the township’s 2025 budget process.
The presentation underscored the nonprofit’s local funding model and volunteer base; Shriner asked the board to consider a municipal contribution or other support options for next year.
