Dubose Elementary reports benchmark gains; district outlines attendance and enrollment outreach

Jasmine Dominguez, principal of Dubose Elementary, told the Alice ISD board March 16 that her campus of about 475 students has shown measurable benchmark gains between October and February and is using targeted interventions to continue progress.
Dominguez said third‑grade reading (RLA) improved from 42% approaching in October to 64% in the February benchmark, and that third‑grade math rose from 25% to 36% after targeted instruction. She described classroom pull‑outs, daily practice, PLCs (professional learning communities), and a February writing boot camp attended by about 100 students as part of the strategy to raise proficiency.
"We're closing the gaps and working to improve those scores," Dominguez said, noting special education supports and a multiplication initiative developed districtwide to ensure readiness for algebra. She said the campus aims to reach its end‑of‑year goal and is tracking progress to a target rating.
Student services director Lanna Basis presented February attendance figures and enrollment trends, reporting encouraging secondary attendance improvements—high school attendance rose to 90.91% for the month from 90.51% last year—while some elementary campuses saw declines after a virus‑related absence week. Basis said the district will partner with local churches and community groups to boost attendance and reminded families that online registration for 2026–27 opens April 1, with in‑person assistance days in May.
Board members noted the importance of continued outreach to increase projected enrollment and requested updated projected figures when registration opens. The district said it will return with enrollment projections in May.
