Board adopts Achievement Gap Advisory Committee charter after split vote

The Albemarle County school board adopted a charter to create an Achievement Gap Advisory Committee after a contentious discussion about timing, staff capacity and the value of a new committee.

During debate several board members said they wanted more information about current division efforts and the professional development plan that administration is proposing before creating another committee. A motion to table consideration of the charter until the division provides a mapping of existing efforts and the professional development schedule was moved by Dr. Akoff and seconded; the motion to table failed on a 3–4 roll-call vote.

A subsequent motion to adopt the charter passed on a 4–3 roll-call vote. Supporters said a community-involved advisory group could surface new perspectives and accelerate work on longstanding achievement gaps; opponents cautioned that forming another committee without first fully mapping existing initiatives risked duplication and wasted volunteer time.

The adopted charter expands student representation on the committee, adjusts appointment and selection processes to provide broader magisterial-district and feeder-pattern representation, and sets an expectation for regular reporting to the board so recommendations can inform budget planning. The board directed administration to move forward with membership and timing per the charter and to provide an update at the next available June or July meeting.

Board members stressed that the charter is intended to supplement — not supplant — existing division work and requested clear timelines that align research and reporting cycles with budget and decision windows.
