Starke commission votes to extend mayor and vice mayor on interim basis until Dec. 16

The Starke City Commission voted to keep its current mayor and vice mayor in their posts on an interim basis until the commission can convene with a full membership, setting Dec. 16 as the target date for new appointments.

Commissioner Mortimer moved that "the mayor continue on as mayor until we have a full board" and proposed Dec. 16 as the date to conclude the interim extension; Commissioner Milner seconded the motion. The commission approved the motion by a reported 3-1 vote, with Commissioner Nent opposing and Commissioner Over Street absent. The board later approved an identical extension for the vice mayor by the same margin.

During discussion, a commissioner noted that repeatedly extending the mayoral term could shorten the next mayor's service: "The mayorship goes from October to the next October," one speaker observed, adding the change could result in the next mayor serving roughly nine months rather than a full year. Commissioners also cited a desire to wait until all members could participate as justification for the short-term extension.

Mayor and succession logistics: commissioners agreed to hold the full selection process when the most members can attend. The extensions were framed by supporters as a procedural courtesy to ensure Commissioner Over Street, who was absent, has the opportunity to participate in the selection process.
