Wastewater superintendent: Pine Null expansion drainage revised; Short Street lift station may need replacement

Chris Martin, the city’s wastewater superintendent, reported routine maintenance and recent repairs and discussed infrastructure questions tied to local development.
Martin said crews completed point repairs near Clint Street after a plugged sewer and that the Pine Null expansion review unearthed storm‑drain calculation issues that the developer corrected; plans now include a retention pond on Middle School Road, and staff requested a guardrail and an added curb at that pond. "They've been pretty responsive and... they've done everything we've asked," Martin said of the developer's revisions.
Board members also raised concerns about the Short Street lift station. Martin said the existing lift station dates to 1972 and that replacing it in today’s dollars would be substantial; he referenced a prior estimate in the neighborhood of $350,000. Martin said the town will need to address the lift station in the next couple of years as growth increases demand.
Martin noted that relocation of utilities tied to bridge work and other community‑crossing projects could affect timelines and funding; he said coordination will continue with county partners and contractors.
