Commission approves pilot parade exit route for livestock show despite resident concerns

The Mercedes City Commission approved Resolution 202601 and related closures to permit the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show parade and take a pilot approach to the parade’s exit route. Police staff proposed redirecting floats north on Texas 491 toward the Summer Breeze area to avoid last year’s congestion near Missouri and Armory streets when show traffic mixed with parade traffic.
"We're going to turn them up to 491 and cut on to Mount," the sergeant said while explaining the revised exit to reduce bottlenecks with livestock-show traffic.
Several commissioners expressed concern about the longer routing through residential areas, possible impacts on school-bus staging and resident access, and pedestrian safety where show attendees and parade participants might mix. Commissioners acknowledged the pilot could be reversed if the routing proved problematic.
The motion to approve the closures and the pilot exit route passed by a 3–1 vote. One commissioner voiced a formal dissent during the roll call, citing inconvenience for nearby residents; commissioners said they expected to evaluate the route after the event and adjust next year if needed.
Staff and livestock-show management will coordinate signage, traffic-control points and officer assignments to keep public access and emergency routes clear during the event. The stock show and parade are scheduled for mid-March, with the parade closure limited to a few hours on the parade day.
Next steps: Police department and event organizers will conduct on-the-ground coordination and publish closure notices to affected neighborhoods and stakeholders prior to the event.
