City staff told the Papillion City Council on May 19 that the Papio Bay aquatic facility will open for the 2026 season but will be closed for the full 2027 season to allow for a renovation and lead time for parts and supplies; the city expects the project to enable reopening in 2028.
"We are anticipating that Papio Bay will not be operating at all for the entire duration of the 2027 season due to the construction schedule and the lead time for parts and supplies," Ms. Powers said during the administrator's report. She added that the FY2026–27 budget will reflect the anticipated 2027 closure.
Ms. Powers reminded the council the 2026 season will open Saturday, May 23, and that splash pads across the city are already open. The administration said there should be no anticipated delays for a 2028 reopening, and that the renovation work will begin after the 2026 season concludes.
Council members also discussed whether the annual "dog day" event at Papio Bay could resume in coming years. Staff cautioned that dog hair and other debris accumulated during such events create strain on the pool filtration system and that filter sand is not replaced annually; resuming the event would require careful planning to avoid damaging the system.
The announcement was delivered as part of the administrator’s report; council did not take separate formal action on the renovation schedule at the meeting.
