The Papillion Volunteer Fire Department presented two automated external defibrillators to the city’s Parks and Recreation Department during the May 19 City Council meeting.
"As I give this to you tonight, to you, to the city, I hope that it gains dust and never gets used," said the donor representing the volunteer fire department, who described an effort that began after a young person died at a school basketball game and has resulted in about "90" AEDs distributed to schools and public facilities over time. He said the donation replaces two expiring devices currently at Sumter and the field house.
Tracy, speaking on behalf of the Papillion Recreation Department, accepted the devices and emphasized their role in public safety. "This gift is more than just equipment. It's an investment in the health and safety of our community," Tracy said, and thanked the volunteer fire department for the partnership.
Speakers at the meeting recounted local rescue stories to underscore the devices’ value, including an account of an employee who survived a cardiac event after an AED was available. Council members and city staff applauded the donation.
The city will place the two AEDs in parks facilities to maintain quick access for emergencies. No formal council action was required; the presentation was recorded as a special presentation on the meeting agenda.
