Los Banos Unified presented a year-two report on its California Community Schools partnership grant and introduced a new family-engagement model the district calls the FAM series.
Dr. Wheeler told trustees the grant work follows four pillars
integrated student supports, family and community engagement, collaborative leadership and extended learning time
including the opening of a family resource center downtown and a large backpack giveaway that served more than 2,300 attendees with more than 1,500 backpacks distributed.
The district reported metrics for its "Success Together" family-learning work: 24 classes across about 15 schools, 933 survey respondents, 1,582 student attendees and an estimated 3,640 total participants (students plus family members). "One hundred percent of the 933 people who responded said that they would recommend Success Together courses to other families," Dr. Wheeler said.
Dr. Wheeler also announced Henry Miller Elementary has been awarded a community-engagement grant of $70,000 per year for two years (total $140,000) to strengthen community-school relationships and professional learning tied to the program.
Vice principal Cruz of Pacheco High School described the FAM series (Families in Action and Mindset), a bilingual, workshop-based family-engagement model co-facilitated with school liaisons and student leaders. Cruz said 25 parents have consistently participated to date; the series provides child care and student volunteers to reduce participation barriers.
Trustees thanked staff for the work and noted upcoming related events such as a district summer kickoff and community partnerships.
Next steps included expanding the Success Together partnership into secondary grades and reporting back to the board with further site-specific details.
