Douglas Unified District governing board approves multiple personnel actions, summer staff and conference travel

The Douglas Unified District governing board on Monday approved a series of personnel actions for the 2026–2027 school year, including certified hires, classified summer-school positions, a certified teacher contract renewal and out-of-state travel for staff to a national school safety conference.

Superintendent Anna C. Samaniego presented the items and noted a correction to one teacher’s school assignment that was made in the record. “It is as presented. I just have one correction,” Samaniego said while reviewing the hires. She also said the travel is being paid from the Stronger Connections grant and that remaining grant funds should be used or lost.

The board moved and approved the certified hires, the classified summer hires (campus security and support staff), a change in hours for an ESS instructional aide and a contract renewal for an existing teacher. The board also approved student observers from Arizona State University and Grand Canyon University for fall 2026 observation hours.

Board member Mr. Lindeman said the membership should be cautious about approving travel even when grant-funded, and asked that staff returning from out-of-state conferences make presentations to the board. “I still think we should take a a good look at these things,” he said, referencing travel reviews and prior freezes.

Votes and outcomes: the motions on certified hires, classified summer hires, the ESS aide hourly change, student observers, the certified contract renewal and the out-of-state travel all carried on roll-call votes with the members present voting yes.

The board did not take action on an internal classified transfer (information only).

The meeting closed with announcements about end-of-year ceremonies at Paul Huber Middle School and the high school graduation schedule.
