Madison Consolidated Schools honors Superintendent Dr. Brown and celebrates student achievements

The Madison Consolidated Schools board opened its May 13 meeting by recognizing Superintendent Dr. Brown for a statewide superintendent-of-the-year honor and celebrating a string of student and program achievements across the district.
Dr. Brown, who the board introduced as the district superintendent, accepted the recognition and turned the meeting over to school presenters. "We are very excited tonight to recognize the Indiana Department of Education is partnering with the National Math Stars NMS to recognize exceptional mathematical stars," Dr. Brown said as the board highlighted individual students and teams.
The board and administrators recognized multiple student accomplishments: Riker Ridge students were named among state-level math honorees, a unified bowling team advanced to state finals and the district’s unified cornhole squad was cited as the inaugural unified cornhole state champion in Indiana. Band and winter guard leaders also reported top competition results, including a gold rating with distinction for the marching band, a first for the district.
Deputy Elementary presented an extended overview of classroom and whole-school strategies, saying the school is pursuing STEM certification and detailing literacy progress. Presenters summarized test-score trends and instructional strategies: benchmark reading instruction, a systematic phonics program for K–2, daily dedicated reading and writing blocks, and tiered interventions for students not meeting benchmarks. "In the 24–25 testing cycle last year, we had 96% of our students passing I-Read," a Deputy presenter said, noting the school’s continued focus on meeting state third-grade reading targets.
The presentation also covered math instruction (the school’s shift to a new program identified in the slides), attendance incentives (brag tags, traveling trophies and weekly incentives) and social-emotional practices under Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) to reduce punitive discipline and support student regulation.
Board members congratulated students and staff. Student representative Savannah also addressed the board, thanking trustees for the opportunity to serve and encouraging community attendance at upcoming fine-arts events.
The meeting closed after routine business and a series of action items. The board adjourned following trustees’ remarks and a summary of upcoming events, including graduation on June 7.
