Road & Bridge presented two bids: John Deere (net price $377,368.98 after a $50,000 trade‑in) and Caterpillar ($418,926 net after a $48,000 trade‑in). County budget documents show $395,000 was budgeted for the purchase; the John Deere bid would come in about $17,691 under budget while the Caterpillar bid exceeded the budget by roughly $23,000.
Bruce White of Road & Bridge walked the board through the bid comparison and warranties. Commissioners questioned the operational implications of switching fleet brands, noting existing investments in Caterpillar parts and mechanic training. One commissioner suggested selling the county’s existing grader on Purple Wave auction to close the price gap, but staff pointed out auction outcomes are uncertain. Given the tradeoffs—price savings against potential longer‑term costs for parts, training and service—the board voted to table the purchase until the next meeting so staff (Dan Miller) could provide more information.
The motion to table scheduled further discussion at the next regular meeting on June 9.
