Grain Valley R‑V board approves meeting agenda, honors student state qualifiers

The Grain Valley R‑V School Board called the meeting to order, confirmed a quorum and adopted the agenda and consent items by voice vote before moving into a series of student recognitions.
"My name is Britney Tenbrun and I serve as a HOSA sponsor alongside Mr. Small, and tonight we are incredibly proud to share the results of our HOSA..." said Britney Tenbrun, introducing HOSA students who advanced at the state leadership conference. Tenbrun noted Khloe Garrison placed fifth in dental terminology and said Tatum Jacobson’s top-five finish in microbiology was "remarkable for a freshman." Tenbrun also reported that Ava Isacson and Karen Guyger qualified for the international conference in Indianapolis after placing at state.
Dr. Drew Smith, filling in for Miss Jackson, recognized DECA students who advanced through district competitions of more than 500 students and competed at state against roughly 2,000 peers. "This group of students had to compete in districts with over 500 students to make it to state," he said, then named the qualifiers recognized that evening.
Emily Chase, director of vocal music, highlighted nine choir students who earned the right to perform at the state solo and small-ensemble contest, explaining the qualification process (district contests, memorized contrasting pieces, and tiered ratings that send gold-rated performers to state). "Every student that performed a solo performed one piece in English and the other in a foreign language, once again, completely memorized," Chase said.
Band director Shane Bachelor described the GVHS percussion ensemble’s invitation to the Music for All National Percussion Festival in Indianapolis, noting the ensemble was one of 12 selected nationwide and the only school from Missouri chosen. He said the group’s March performances included workshops and an honors recital where student Maline Shy was selected as the soloist.
Spanish teacher Jay Kilpatrick explained the Missouri Seal of Biliteracy requirements — passing state ELA benchmarks (ELA2/EOC) or qualifying ACT reading/English scores and a nationally recognized language-proficiency exam — and recognized students who met those standards in Spanish.
The board’s formal action recorded in the meeting transcript was adoption of the agenda and consent agenda by voice vote; the mover and seconder were not named in the transcript and no roll-call tally was recorded. After the recognitions, the meeting continued with the remainder of the agenda as announced by the chair.
