The Mamakating Town Board approved a settlement addressing an unpermitted camp that had been operating at 450 Walker Valley Road. Town officials reported the camp carried out construction without approvals and later brought children to the site; town counsel pursued removal and negotiated a settlement that includes a $42,000 fine and a requirement that the operator obtain planning-board approval and building permits before returning.
A town official described the conduct as more than an oversight and said the town would ‘‘hit them hard’’ to set an example; another board member said the operation appeared to be an attempt to avoid required approvals. The board recorded that the settlement and fines were agreed with counsel and moved to ratify the agreement.
The motion to approve the 450 Walker Valley Road settlement was made and seconded and the transcript records the board’s approval. The board also said staff will continue to monitor other recently discovered unauthorized structures and follow up with the Department of Health and planning as appropriate.
