"As a token of appreciation, we're going to name it after you, sir," a commissioner said during the meeting, and the motion to create the Omar Rivera Veterans Memorial Advisory Committee carried on the first reading; the item will return for a second reading with formal appointments.
Staff told the commission the city would cover the largest share of initial costs but emphasized the need for public input and phased work so names can be added over time. Commissioners discussed potential plaque materials and modest initial installations; no precise budget was finalized during the first reading.
The committee is expected to gather community input, compile and verify names for plaques, and report back to the commission with design options. The commission directed staff to prepare the second reading of the ordinance and bring nominee names for appointment.
