District 5 honors 73 students with foundation research and engineering grants

District 5 Foundation and school staff recognized 73 students who received more than $15,000 in research, engineering and internship grants; presenters reviewed dozens of projects spanning biomedical, environmental, engineering and music education research.
The board paused its regular business to recognize students who received District 5 Foundation and sponsor grants across research and capstone programs.
Dr. Mary Kennerly of the District 5 Foundation told the board that 73 students were awarded more than $15,000 this year and thanked sponsors, parents and teachers for supporting student research. "I have to use a dictionary when I read through the grants—our students are just outstanding," she said.
Teachers and program leads read awards and briefly described projects, which ranged from advanced placement research on nanoparticle acne treatments and bioengineered plastics to engineering capstone projects such as a remote on‑road anomaly detection system and a Kids Safe Alert temperature/motion detector for vehicles. Intern and capstone projects included classroom greenhouse designs, adaptive irrigation systems, and 3D‑printed educational rockets.
Dr. Martin Shakola and other instructors presented additional engineering design and development grants, and the board invited sponsors and parents to front for group photographs. The recognition included an unusual first: a church‑sponsored music education grant, noted presenters.
The celebration closed with applause and the board moved on to other agenda items; administrators said they will share photos and encourage sponsors to attend community events to showcase student work.
