Board advances second reading of student policy package, asks staff to clarify removal and attendance language

The Lovington Municipal Schools board completed the second reading of policy sections J4711 through J7261 and asked staff to refine language in several sections before final adoption.

Board members focused on how existing policies interact with state athletic and activity rules. Mr. Bishop noted the district had reviewed attendance under policy 4550 and that current practice complies with NMAA and existing board policy. "We're in compliance," Mr. Bishop said when summarizing the data staff shared on pre- and post-holiday attendance counts.

A point of detailed discussion was policy J4890, which governs removal of students from school-sponsored activities. One board member said the draft language was "wordy" and asked for clearer thresholds that differentiate removal for disciplinary violations from removals for other administrative reasons. Staff agreed to review the statutory language and bring revised wording back to the board. The superintendent offered to take the suggested edits and to return the clarified language on the three identified policies for the next meeting.

Other items raised during the review included beverage sales restrictions at middle schools (policy 4981), the school health advisory council membership (a board representative is required by the policy text), elementary school field-day requirements, and whether policy 6950 should explicitly list liability for district technical devices in the same manner it lists textbooks and library materials. Board members asked staff to add explicit language if needed so parents have a clear written expectation about responsibility for checked-out devices.

The board approved the second reading of the J-section policies with noted changes to be returned for confirmation; no final policy adoption vote was recorded during this meeting.
