Students also sought authorization to proceed with a senior trip to Universal Orlando (the class’s preferred option) with an estimated per‑student cost of approximately $1,800. Board members repeatedly praised the students’ planning but expressed concern about affordability and inclusion. One member said the price was “a ton of money” and reluctantly voted against the authorization; others voted to approve the authorization so students could begin fundraising and firm up participant counts.
The board approved a motion that will allow students to solicit commitments and deposits; administrators said students can return in the fall with updated participation figures and financing options. Committee members suggested contingency plans, such as lower‑cost alternatives or phased payment plans, to broaden access.
Separately, the committee reaffirmed the district’s established senior‑privileges policy — a selective, accountability‑based program that allows qualifying seniors a free period — after student testimony describing the privilege as an earned incentive tied to attendance, grades and discipline standards. The policy remained in place following a voice vote, though one member said they opposed it on safety grounds.
