Roselle moves to prohibit parking around St. Walter's Church and School to ease congestion

Deputy Chief Gates asked the village board to adopt permanent no‑parking restrictions on select streets around St. Walter's Church and School, saying staff and school/church officials identified recurring congestion, double parking and vehicles blocking crosswalks and driveways during operating hours.

Gates said staff found the current mix of posted regulations did not align with ordinance language and identified parallel stalls on the north curb of West Pine Avenue that were not ADA‑compliant and therefore recommended removal. To address safety and access concerns, staff proposed consistent "no parking anytime" zones on: the south side of West Maple Avenue from Valley to Hill; the east side of Valley from Maple to Pine; the south side of West Pine Avenue from Valley to Hill; and the west side of Hill Street from West Maple to West Pine. Staff recommended support parking on the north side of West Pine Avenue with marked stalls and delineated no‑parking areas.

Trustees raised questions about resident impacts, notification and whether the restrictions would be permanent. Gates said affected residents had not all been notified yet but that the proposal originated with church and school staff and residents raising safety concerns. He said staff will coordinate signage and pavement marking with public works and work with the church and school to educate parents and parishioners before enforcement.

Trustees directed staff to move forward and said they expected staff to monitor the zone and tweak restrictions if they do not function as planned. The recommendation will return to the board for formal adoption after signage and a grace/education period.
