Council approves transfer of roughly 7.5 acres for State Veterans Cemetery in Carlsbad

Mister Patterson briefed the council on a request from the New Mexico Department of Veterans Services to accept roughly 7.5 additional acres within Sunset Garden Cemetery to accommodate a larger design for a State Veterans Cemetery. He said the acreage would include the 3.25 acres the city had previously deeded back to itself and an additional roughly 4.25 acres of Tract B to reach the total.
Patterson explained the state originally selected Carlsbad as one of four sites and that earlier deeds and adjustments were part of the design process. He said the state plans to fully fund the cemetery—covering planning, construction, fencing and maintenance—and the city would deed the property free and clear to the state if the council approved the resolution.
Councilors asked whether the city would maintain the ground during the design and construction wait; Patterson said the city would mow and keep the parcel cleaned of debris until the state breaks ground, at which point the state would assume maintenance. The resolution to transfer the property was adopted.
Why it matters: Patterson said the project is one of four veterans cemeteries under the funding source and that approval will allow the state to proceed with final design and construction schedules for the site in Carlsbad.
