Christie Crockett, board president and interim executive director of Southeast New Mexico Community Action Corporation (SNMCAC), presented the agency’s senior services and asked the city to continue partnering to meet local needs. “We’re serving over a 120,000 meals to seniors in Eddy County,” Crockett told the council, citing program numbers in support of the agency’s expansion plans.
Crockett said 735 Carlsbad residents participate in the program and that of the 120,000 countywide meals SNMCAC serves, more than 67,000 are delivered within Carlsbad. She outlined a suite of programs including congregate and home-delivered meals, a foster-grandparent program that places older adults in classrooms, a senior-companion program for in-home assistance, and an adult day program in Carlsbad and Artesia.
Why it matters: Crockett said state and federal grants require documented local partnerships and that local matches or support increase the odds of award and sustainability. She described ongoing and planned RFPs—transportation expansion to include social events and church trips, an RSVP volunteer-stipend program, and a chores pilot to help seniors with yard work and light maintenance—that would broaden services beyond meals.
Financials and next steps: Crockett told council staff would present program financials to the city budget committee on Feb. 20 and said grant funding from state and federal partners does not fully cover costs; local support and partnerships are important to demonstrate commitment in future RFPs.
Council response and questions: Councilors thanked the presenters and asked clarifying questions about program scope and implementation. The presentation concluded with staff noting they would follow up in the budget process.
