Union County Fair Board seeks bigger city contribution to support fairground improvements and events

Jimmy Hutcherson, representing the Union County Fair Board, reviewed recent and planned fairground improvements — including a 30-by-100 lean-to added to the arena, tie-outs, wash racks and restroom repairs — and asked the council to increase the town’s annual contribution from $1,000 to $10,000 to support construction projects and attract events.
Hutcherson outlined specific costs seen at the fair: a lean-to costing about $17,000, a barn tie-out about $1,900, wash-rack improvements for $500, and a dilapidated bathroom estimated at $20,000–$22,000. He said new events, such as a Myrtle Invitational cross-country meet and additional rodeos, bring thousands of visitors who spend locally on food, fuel and hotels.
"I'd ask if you'd increase it to $10,000. Take that into consideration," Hutcherson said. Council members did not record a denial; the request was presented for consideration and follow-up.
