Council roundup: family day, committee minutes, policies approved and SMART host change
Summary
At its Jan. 12 meeting Hanover council approved Family Day programming, received committee minutes and adopted several staff policies (health & safety, workplace violence/harassment, significant weather event), passed the bylaw package and agreed to designate Bruce County as host municipality for SMART’s provincial funding application.
In addition to larger agenda items, Hanover council completed a series of routine and procedural matters on Jan. 12.
Council carried the consent agenda and highlighted the Family Day event (Monday, Feb. 16 at the P&H Centre), with activities including free swims and skates, crafts hosted by the Hanover Public Library and a junior hockey fundraiser. Council received Age‑Friendly Advisory Committee minutes (which noted a seniors expo March 24) and a Hanover Police Station update from PlusVG Architects; a class‑C cost estimate for the station is expected in coming weeks.
Staff presented and council adopted the town’s annual health‑and‑safety policy and work plan and the workplace violence and harassment policy (both HR items were approved with housekeeping changes and an updated reference to the Ontario Human Rights Code). Council also adopted a Significant Weather Event policy (PW0126) after debate over how the town should post declarations to the public; an amendment to require the town to "endeavor" to post by all channels was defeated before the main motion carried.
Council approved a motion to designate the County of Bruce as host municipality for SMART (Sogi Mobility and Regional Transit) so the service can apply for provincial Public Transportation Fund allocations. Council then introduced and passed four bylaws (3370‑3373‑26) covering the Sogi Municipal Airport cost‑sharing agreement, interim 2026 tax levies, dedicated gas tax fund collection by the County of Bruce, and the ORV regulation. The meeting concluded with a motion to go into closed session to discuss confidential competitive and labour matters.
