Oyster River students advance to National History Day nationals with research on historical connections

Students from Oyster River High School described months of archival research and original analysis for National History Day projects, and teachers said seven local students will compete at the national contest in mid-June.
Social studies teacher Nate Grove told the board the district integrates National History Day (NHD) into the sophomore curriculum as a scaffolded, multi-month research project that emphasizes primary sources, analytical writing and public presentation. "This year we sent 23 students to the state National History Day competition in April," Grove said; seven of those students advanced to nationals.
Sophomores Alexa Lawrence and Vivian Stewart presented their website project, explaining how their initial thesis evolved and how they pursued primary sources at the National Archives and other repositories. They described technical hurdles: school-network filtering that blocked key research sites and the need to rebuild their website on the official NHD platform when they advanced from the school-level exposition.
Grove and the students also explained how NHD judging works: teachers nominate projects they consider competitive and a calibrated review across classes selects entries for the state competition; state judging involves presentation to a panel and in-person questioning.
The board and audience members praised the students' work and resilience. The students will attend the National History Day competition June 14'18, accompanied by staff chaperones.
What happens next: the district will support travel and chaperone logistics for the national competition and continue integrating NHD in the social studies sequence as a high-impact, research-focused learning experience.
