Woodridge pins patrol Sergeant Alec Sander and proclaims Diwali week; HRAC invites community to Oct. 26 festival

The Village of Woodridge introduced and formally swore in its newest patrol sergeant and issued a Diwali proclamation during its regular meeting.

Chief Stephenson introduced Alec (Alec/Alexander) Sander, reviewing his service history — hired in July 2016, a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of North Florida and a master’s from Lewis University — and recounted commendations for evidence work that aided an armed robbery identification and for early work securing a domestic homicide scene. "With training ... he'll be an excellent candidate for a future specialty position," Chief Stephenson said while outlining Sander’s selection for the countywide DUMEG drug unit and later supervisory roles there.

Sander took the oath of office, repeating: "I, Alexander, having been appointed to the office of Sergeant in the village of Woodridge ... do solemnly swear ... that I will faithfully discharge the duties of sergeant according to the best of my ability." He selected his father to pin his badge, will wear star number 82, and thanked Mayor Gina Cunningham, Administrator Stoneage and the board for their support.

The board also recognized Diwali. Trustee Durkin read a proclamation declaring Oct. 18–22, 2025 as Diwali week in Woodridge and announced the Human Relations Advisory Committee’s Diwali Festival of Lights on Sunday, Oct. 26 at Bobac Signature Events. Deepo Gosh, an HRAC member, described the event and invited trustees and residents, noting the Consulate General of India had confirmed attendance and the ceremony will include an oil‑lamp lighting, cultural performances and food.

Mayor Gina Cunningham and other trustees offered congratulations to Sergeant Sander and thanked the HRAC for organizing the celebration.
