Board hears strategic-plan guidance and adult-education proposals including GED-for-credit and new online platform

At the May 26 meeting, the Romulus Community Schools board received a strategic-plan briefing from consultant Randy Leipa and two presentations from Wendy Gish on adult education.
Leipa (Michigan Leadership Institute) outlined the strategic-plan structure—mission, vision and goals—and recommended that the board re-examine the vision statements collected from stakeholders, revise measurable goals tied to that vision, and take steps to ensure broader ownership and implementation across staff and buildings. “The mission statement communicates the organization's reason for being,” Leipa said, describing the vision as an aspirational, multi-year picture that should guide measurable goal-setting.
Wendy Gish presented two related proposals for the Ramulus (Romulus) district’s RVLC and adult-education programs. First, she proposed awarding high-school credits to students who pass parts or all of the GED or HiSET assessments, using official score reports and a written request process; she said other districts such as Sparta and Muskegon already award credits under Michigan testing-out rules.
Gish summarized the credit equivalencies she recommends for the Michigan Merit Curriculum (for example, passing the Reasoning through Language Arts portion as equivalent to multiple ELA credits at the approved passing score), and said credits earned by examination would be documented on transcripts. She proposed age and enrollment eligibility (at least 17, enrolled in Romulus Adult Ed or RVLC) and explained how partial-test passers would complete remaining coursework.
Second, Gish proposed adopting the Subject online learning platform (replacing Ingenuity/E2020) starting July 1, 2026, citing more modern content, language supports, an AI chat help tool, NCAA accreditation, and a planned expansion of CTE pathway offerings. Board members asked whether the action needed to be on the next meeting agenda to meet summer-school timing; Gish said an action item at the next meeting would allow implementation in time for summer programming if approved.
