Commission approves new overnight parking hours to aid snowplows; downtown business owner urges compromise

The Sault Ste. Marie City Commission on Monday approved an amendment to the city code that shifts the overnight parking restriction from 3 a.m.–6 a.m. to midnight–7 a.m. The change, approved on second reading, aims to give plow crews more time to clear side streets before daytime traffic.

Public Service Director Tyler Parin told commissioners the change was driven by operational needs: "It is to amend the overnight parking hours ... to midnight to 7 a.m. just due to the burdens of plowing overnight with vehicles still in the street," he said, explaining the adjustment gives crews and the day shift better windows to plow.

Downtown resident and business advocate Suanne Wilks asked the commission to consider impacts on bars and late-night businesses, suggesting a narrower window such as 2 a.m.–6 a.m. She warned patrons and staff could be forced to move vehicles earlier than patrons expect and urged additional grace for downtown commercial corridors.

Commissioners discussed pre-existing exemptions for main routes and downtown downtown blocks; staff said the downtown corridors are plowed overnight and a reasonable grace period for bars would be included.
